BAGHDAD — As many as 15 Iraqi policemen were killed and 27 wounded Tuesday after responding to a rocket attack against U.S. bases in Baghdad, while three U.S. troops were killed by an improvised explosive device in a separate attack.

The U.S. military said in a statement Wednesday that three soldiers were killed Tuesday night in northwestern Baghdad when their vehicle was struck by an IED. Their names were not released.

In yet another attack, Samir al-Attar, deputy minister of Iraq’s Ministry of Science and Technology, was wounded Wednesday when two roadside bombs detonated near his convoy about a minute apart as he was driving through Baghdad, according to police and ministry officials. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t allowed to release the information.

Four U.S. soldiers were wounded Tuesday’s rocket attack against their outposts in the capital, the military said. It was the second such attack against U.S. targets in as many days.

Nobody claimed responsibility for the attacks, but in both cases the rockets apparently were launched from Shiite militia strongholds in the capital, raising concern about renewed activity ahead of a deadline for the anti-U.S. cleric Muqtada al-Sadr to renew a cease-fire order.
