BANGOR, Maine — A former member of the Maine Army National Guard is going to prison for a year and a day for a scam that allowed him to draw pay from his civilian employer and the military at the same time.
Dale Basher of Waterville was sentenced Thursday in U.S. District Court in Bangor. He also was ordered to pay more than $97,000 in restitution.
Basher was paid nearly $100,000 in salary and bonuses by MBNA credit card company over a 27-month period from 2002 to 2004 while on active duty with a National Guard unit in Waterville. MBNA was later bought by Bank of America.
Civilian soldiers who go on active duty usually take an unpaid leave of absence from their jobs, but Basher continued to receive paychecks from MBNA that were electronically transferred to his bank account.
Basher, 36, has been dishonorably discharged from the Guard.
