Did anyone else receive another letter this week re: data theft?
Going bonkers here -

Think it came on Monday. My husband opened it - said, "Looks like it's about that data theft." and he set it aside to read later. Now we can't find it.

If anyone else received one, could you post the info contained in the letter here?

I'll keep looking, and maybe check the V.A. site to see if they have any recent updates for veterans. In the meantime, thought I'd ask here...

Thanks in advance -

1. It's nothing
Just a reassurance that they have found the computer and that everyones data is safe.

4. Thanks.
You just saved me having to go through the dreaded stack of bills. It may have ended up there, and I really don't want to face them today.

May have found it here?:

2. I did.
It was concerning a second computer theft from a VA hospital. "Only" 60,000 or so records on this one. It was recovered, and they're "confident" that no data was stolen.

5. Ah, a comforting 'Don't worry, Be happy' note.
"If anything was truly wrong, you would not have been notified because we've all headed for the hills. In the meantime, please be extra vigilant and carefully monitor your financial records."

Trust us, Nothing can go wrong, wrong, wrong....

thanks for the response.

3. I got one.
It was an explanation of what they allege occurred. I looked at it then discarded it. Like the comedian said, if someone tried to rob me, they'd just be practicin' -- there ain't nothin' there!

7. Wanna know what's scary?
We moved to another state (last month) between the first and second letters.

The second one came addressed to the "right address".

How'd they know?

9. The IRS sent those letters out, not the VA
They did it based on TIN (Taxpayer Identification Number), aka SSAN.

Your employer, or, if you are retired and updated your info in DEERS and at DFAS, feeds that info to IRS.

Alternatively, if the time frame was too soon or you didn't notify anyone of the change, their mail is usually of the "Do Not Forward" variety. If you left a forwarding address with the post office, the letter would be returned to sender with updated address, and a new envelope prepared and the address put in the file.

10. ah - I figured it was *something*
but it was just kinda weird, you know?

*We* didn't update anything. The timeframe doesn't really fit a "return" and then resending. And I suppose the employer may have uploaded the info in the timeframe, but it still struck me as really odd that they knew so quickly.

We just closed on the new house just over a month ago.

11. You gotta give your TIN to the mortgage company
They probably did the hard work for you. Any time there's more than Ten Grand going anywhere with your TIN on it, our tax pals take notice.

8. Yes, it was the ALL CLEAR letter--one page, very simple
It basically said they found the laptop, that it looked like the data wasn't accessed, they tested it to make sure, so no need to worry about your data falling into the hands of evildoers.

Left unspoken and unsaid: PHEW!!! We won't have to pay for credit monitoring!!!!!

13. The efficiency of the VA is overwhelming
I simply can't believe how insecure our data is in the hands of the VA. In the history of my dealings with VA I'm not in the least bit reassured. Meanwhile I'll keep monitoring my credit reports on my own.
