COLUMBUS, Ga. — A Fort Benning soldier has pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the death of his 5-year-old stepson.

Superior Court Judge Frank Jordan Jr. sentenced 34-year-old Ryan F. Archer to 30 years in prison Tuesday.

Archer admitted to the June 4, 2007 slaying of Zechariah Schuman.

Assistant District Attorney LaRae Moore said Archer was watching Zechariah and his 6-year-old sister when he became upset with the boy.

Archer initially faced a murder charge.

1. It's murder plead down to manslaughter
