Cherry Point clubs await lawmakers’ approval

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — Two down, one to go.

With blessings in hand from Headquarters Marine Corps and the Defense Department, plans for a new building that will house the officers’ club and staff noncommissioned officers’ clubs at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., await approval only from Congress.

Air station officials hope construction on the $6.8 million project will begin next spring. If that happens, the building could be open for business in the fall of 2010, said Paul Pisano, deputy director for Marine Corps Community Services at Cherry Point.

The building will feature nearly 21,000 square feet of space. Inside, there will be separate lounges — 1,600 square feet each — for officers and staff NCOs, a ballroom, a large kitchen and a family-style restaurant.

“It’s going to be a little bit different from traditional clubs,” Pisano said. “The facility’s really going to be an all-purpose facility.”

Lt. Col. Glenn Vogel, commanding officer of the air station’s Headquarters & Headquarters Squadron, said that is “a fact of life with fiscal constraints.”
