Group proposes Air Force One museum in N.C.

A group of former airmen and journalists want to build a $35 million museum honoring the iconic Air Force One in Wilmington, N.C.

The proposed Air Force One Museum would occupy about 30 acres of state-owned land adjacent to the Wilmington International Airport, said Bill Williams, director of the North Carolina Department of Transportation Aviation Division.

Williams will brief NCDOT officials on the proposal on Thursday and expect a decision on whether the group can use the land in the next couple of months, he said.

Chuck Violette, the founder of the Air Force One museum foundation, is a former CBS cameraman who spent much of his 20-year career as a White House journalist flying on Air Force One.

“It was such a curiosity to most people,” Violette said.
