Va. senators raise concerns over carrier

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Virginia’s senators are raising environmental concerns in a battle over the Navy’s plan to base a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier at Mayport Naval Station in Florida.

Sen. John Warner, a Republican, and Sen. Jim Webb, a Democrat, question whether an environmental review of the plan will be adequate. They also say deepening the channel so Mayport can accommodate a carrier could harm whales and manatees.

The lawmakers voiced their concerns in a letter sent Monday to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Neither agency had comment on the letter.

The Navy has said it chose Florida to spread out its Atlantic fleet beyond Norfolk.
