Father Fears Son Exposed to AsbestosDecember 10, 2008
Fayetteville Observer
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The father of a Fort Bragg Soldier says the Army badly handled an asbestos contamination incident in a Bragg barracks building last week.
The father, Evon Colchiski of Ocala, Fla., thinks the Soldiers who live in the building should be monitored for years for asbestos-caused diseases, such as lung cancer. The heating system may have spread asbestos dust throughout the barracks, he said.
"My son is extremely concerned about his health and the health of the other Soldiers that are continually being housed in this building. What are we going to do?" Colchiski said.
His son, 21-year-old Jason Colchiski, is a private who served a year in Iraq. Pvt. Colchiski and other Soldiers Wednesday and Thursday removed floor tile from a storeroom in a barracks building on Grave Street at Gruber Road.
The building is from the Korean War era. Only the storeroom is being renovated.
