Air Force leaders will stand up Global Strike Command’s provisional headquarters at Bolling Air Force Base, Washington, D.C., before a permanent location is chosen.
As part of the largest organizational shakeup since the 1990s, Secretary Michael Donley announced in October that 8th Air Force and 20th Air Force will fall under Global Strike Command as it takes over the service’s nuclear mission.
Service officials chose Bolling, which has no nuclear units on base, over bases with existing nuclear missions, such as Minot Air Force Base, N.D., and Barksdale Air Force Base, La., because of its proximity to the Pentagon and its available facilities, said Capt. Elizabeth Aptekar, an Air Force spokeswoman.
“We considered locations that had existing facilities and that best leveraged nuclear expertise in the area,” Aptekar said.
About 55 airmen will make up the provisional headquarters as the command prepares to reach initial operating capability in September 2009, she said.
