Ky. Airman Killed In Vietnam To Be Buried

FRANKFORT, Ky. — A Kentucky airman missing for years since his plane crashed in Vietnam in 1968 will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery on Dec. 18.

The Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs announced Friday that Air Force Maj. John Lee McElroy’s remains have been recovered, and he’ll be interred with his crewmates at Arlington.

McElroy’s son and two daughters, who live in Kentucky, will attend the burial.

The military says McElroy, of Eminence, was the navigator aboard a C-130 plane that crashed after being hit by ground fire. According to a 1968 letter to McElroy’s parents from Col. Marion F. Caruthers, McElroy was on an evacuation mission for American and allied personnel when the plane was shot down.
