NORTH LAS VEGAS — In 1941, when the Strip was still U.S. 91 and not even 10,000 people lived in the city, Las Vegas was a practical place to build a military base.
But no other metropolitan area in the country grew faster in 1990s than the Las Vegas area, and the region has remained among the top five fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the country since 2000.
That is putting suburban sprawl on a collision course with Nellis Air Force Base, one of the nation’s top combat training bases.
Nellis commander Col. Howard Belote worries that if open space to the north that accommodates aircraft training and combat-preparation flights is lost, then “the reason for Nellis to exist is almost gone.”
Still, North Las Vegas is charging ahead with growth.
