Christmas came early for airmen and other service members and federal workers after President Bush gave them Dec. 26 off “with pay and without a charge to leave.”

Bush issued the executive order Dec. 13, “excusing executive branch non-Postal Service employees from duty on Friday, December 26, 2008, with pay and without a charge to leave, except those who, in the judgment of the head of the agency, cannot be excused for reasons of national security, defense or other essential public need.”

If an airman has scheduled to expend “use or lose” leave Dec. 26 and is unable to reschedule it before the end of the leave year Jan. 3, the leave will be forfeited, according to the memorandum.

Airmen and other service members working in the Washington, D.C., area will also get Jan. 20, Inauguration Day, off.

“Employees are entitled to this holiday if they are employed in the District of Columbia, Montgomery and Prince Georges Counties in Maryland, Arlington and Fairfax Counties in Virginia, and the cities of Alexandria and Falls Church in Virginia,” according to the Office of Personnel Management.
