Army Secretary Pete Geren will stay on the job until his successor takes over under the new Obama administration, the Army announced Monday.

A successor has not yet been named.

Geren, a former Democratic congressman from Fort Worth, Texas, was confirmed for the Army’s top civilian leadership position in July 2007.

He had been acting secretary since March of that year when then-Secretary Francis J. Harvey was forced to resign following revelations that wounded soldiers were languishing in medical hold companies and poor housing at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

In a statement released Monday, Geren said he will stay on at the request of Defense Secretary Robert Gates, whom President-elect Barack Obama has asked to continue serving in his administration.
