There will be nearly 4,400 promotions to the ranks of sergeant through sergeant major in January, according to data released by the Human Resources Command today.

Senior noncommissioned officer sequence numbers and mid-ranks cutoff scores call for 11 advancements to sergeant major for the Regular Army, 78 to master sergeant, 690 to sergeant first class, 1,307 to staff sergeant and 2,275 to sergeant.

The monthly forecast calls for about 800 more promotions than were authorized for January 2008.

All total, the Army plans to promote nearly 51,000 soldiers to the NCO ranks in 2009, a slight downturn from the roughly 52,000 soldiers promoted in 2008.

Promotions to sergeant will come from a pool of 16,466 eligible corporals and specialists, and advancements to staff sergeant from a group of 16,280 promotable sergeants.

uhc comment: This is another case of history repeating itself - I was promoted to SSG in 1970 for the same reason. The Army needs NCOs to make things happen.
