HONOLULU — Pearl Harbor will become the main hub for the Navy’s new Virginia-class nuclear submarines, with about two-thirds of the subs initially being based there, Navy officials say.
The Navy plans to build at least 19 of the submarines at a cost of about $2.5 billion each, but the number that will pass through Pearl Harbor hasn’t been released.
The overall number of attack submarines in Pearl Harbor — about 15 — won’t change, said Capt. W. Scott Gureck, a spokesman for the U.S. Pacific Fleet.
The Navy revealed its Virginia-class submarine distribution information Thursday at an annual military update for the business community hosted by the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii.
Eventually, the Virginia-class submarines will replace existing Los Angeles-class submarines as they reach the end of their life spans, said Capt. W. Scott Gureck, a spokesman for the U.S. Pacific Fleet.
