MOUNT LAUREL, N.J. — One of five men convicted last month of conspiring to kill U.S. soldiers proclaims that he and the others are innocent in a letter he sent to the judge who oversaw their trial.

“We still proclaim our innocence. A verdict has been passed but by no means does it mean that the truth of the matter has been found,” Eljvir Duka wrote in a Dec. 26 letter to U.S. District Court Judge Robert Kugler that was posted on a court Web site Monday.

Duka said he was writing on behalf of all five men, though that could not be confirmed. None of the men testified in their trial, and the 2-page letter represented the first public comment by any suspect on the verdict.

A federal jury Dec. 22 convicted the men of conspiring to kill military personnel. Four of them were convicted of weapons offenses. All five men were acquitted on attempted murder charges.

Authorities say the men were considering targeting Fort Dix, an Army installation in New Jersey used primarily to train reservists for deployments in Iraq.
