Miss. Guard Unit Prepares to Deploy

GREENWOOD, Miss. — A Mississippi Army National Guard unit in Greenwood will mobilize in May for a scheduled one-year deployment to Iraq.

The company of the 198th Combined Arms Battalion has 130 soldiers, according to its commander, 1st Lt. Murray B. Shugars.

The 198th replaced a Field Artillery unit that was located in Greenwood for more that 40 years. The 1-114th was deactivated when its soldiers returned home from Afghanistan in 2005.

The 198th is a mechanized infantry battalion equipped with Bradley fighting vehicles.
