BAGHDAD — A bomb in northwestern Baghdad killed three Iraqi civilians and wounded two American soldiers Tuesday afternoon, according to a 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division news release.

The explosion happened about 3:15 p.m. near a parked American convoy in Baghdad’s Mansour district. The two wounded soldiers were evacuated to a nearby treatment facility with injuries that do not appear to be life-threatening. The blast also caused minor damage to three military vehicles.

Soldiers with the 1st Battalion, 54th Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division responded the incident. An investigation is ongoing, but intelligence sources say an al-Qaida in Iraq cell was responsible for the attack.

"AQI operates outside the rule of law with complete disregard for innocent Iraqis," said Maj. Kone Faulkner, spokesman for the 2/1 HBCT, which is responsible for the area.
