Gates: Military interrogation rules enough
Gates: Military interrogation rules enough

WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Robert Gates says President Barack Obama’s order requiring all U.S. personnel to follow the Army Field Manual while interrogating detainees is appropriate.

At a Pentagon briefing Thursday, Gates said the U.S. knows more about al-Qaida now than it did in the years before and immediately after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. He said he believes that the need for interrogation tactics that go beyond those allowed in the Army Field Manual is now “dramatically less.”

Gates didn’t respond directly when asked whether the intelligence gathered through harsh interrogations such as waterboarding had been worth the international condemnation. But he echoed Obama’s view that officials have to consider what’s gained from “more severe interrogation measures” against the effect on the nation’s values.
