Larger pay raises. Better health care for wounded veterans. Fewer deployments.
Those are just a few priorities that service members have for the new commander in chief.
While uncertain about what kind of change President Barack Obama will bring to the military, troops said they’re nevertheless pleased with his team-building approach during the transition period, as well as his wife Michelle’s pledge to advocate for military families.
Army Reserve Sgt. 1st Class Terri Stroub, motor sergeant for Alpha Company, 801st Combat Support Hospital, at Fort Sheridan Reserve Center, Ill. praised Obama’s move to retain Defense Secretary Robert Gates and said she was “ecstatic” to hear about Michelle Obama’s interest in focusing on the struggles of military families.
But Stroub said she was concerned about Obama’s plans to close the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and wondered how future defense budgets could affect her reserve unit, which she said is short of necessary medical and transportation equipment.
