President Barack Obama nominated Maj. Gen. Michael C. Gould, director of operations and plans for U.S. Transportation Command, to be the Air Force Academy’s 18th superintendent, replacing Lt. Gen. John F. Regni once he retires later this year.
Gould, a 1976 Academy graduate, commanded 2nd Air Force at Keesler Air Force Base, Miss., and 3rd Air Force at RAF Mildenhall, England, before he arrived at U.S. Transportation Command. He is a command pilot with over 3,000 hours in both cargo jets and tankers.
The academy football team can expect to receive more attention from the new superintendent — his first assignment was as the graduate assistant football coach in 1976. Gould returned to the academy in 1981, teaching physical education and serving as the assistant golf coach and head prep-school football coach.
Regni still plans to preside over the graduation for the class of 2009 on May 27 despite his retirement plans, according to a press release.
He graduated from the academy in 1973, three years before Gould. He took over as the superintendent after commanding Air University and 2nd Air Force.
