Kan. Guardsman settles suit with city

TOPEKA, Kan. — A settlement has been reached in a lawsuit filed by a Kansas Air National Guard member against the city of Iola over employment.

A decree order was approved Tuesday by a federal judge to settle the case between Randall Slocum and the city of Iola regarding action taken against him while he was called to military service.

The order requires the city to repay Slocum $2,931 in back wages, interest and damages and to remove all discipline records in his personnel file related to his service in the Kansas Air National Guard.

Slocum sued after the city fire department disciplined him and denied him a wage increase because he was called to duty.

Under terms of the agreement, the city doesn’t claim guilt for its actions but must give Slocum a pay raise he is due.
