FORT RUCKER, Ala. — A Fort Rucker soldier has been charged with manslaughter in the death of his 5-month-old son, who died nearly three months after he was brought to base authorities when he stopped breathing Fort Rucker officials said Wednesday that Spc. Dedrick Fisher Sr. was charged under Army proceedings that can lead to a court-martial.

Fisher and his wife took Dedrick Fisher Jr. to the military police station at Fort Rucker on Nov. 11. He allegedly choked during a feeding and stopped breathing, base officials said. The child was rushed to Dale County Medical Center, then flown to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham. Later he was returned to Dale Medical Center, where he died Monday.

Fisher has been under a no-contact order with the family and was only allowed to see his son as part of supervised visits prior to the death.

Fort Rucker spokesman Paul Prince said defense attorneys provided to Fisher under the Army proceedings are not allowed to comment on cases pending trial. Fort Rucker officials are seeking pretrial confinement of the soldier.

The baby’s death prompted the Ala. Department of Human Resources to remove a 2-year-old child from the Fisher residence.
