SAN DIEGO — A jury in Ventura, Calif., on Thursday convicted two former Navy Seabees of murder and conspiracy in the 2006 shooting death of one of the sailors’ ex-husband, according to news reports.
The jury had deliberated less than a day in convicting Rebecca G. Braswell, 28, and Matthew Toerner, 22, the Ventura County Star reported on its Web site Thursday. They were charged in the Dec. 1, 2006, death of Braswell’s ex-husband, former sailor John Marmo Jr., 27, who was in a custody fight over their daughter.
Braswell, a former construction mechanic, and Toerner, a former constructionman apprentice stationed at nearby Port Hueneme, could face up to life in prison without parole. They will be sentenced at a separate hearing.
A third former Seabee, former Construction Mechanic 3rd Class Shannon M. Butler, also faces trial on similar murder and conspiracy charges. Another former Seabee, former Builder Constructionman Apprentice Seth A. Hardy, will be tried separately on two counts of attempted murder.
