OFFUTT AIR FORCE BASE, Neb. — Offutt Air Force Base will be getting a new radar system to help pilots avoid birds and the threat they pose to aircraft over the Omaha area.
An Offutt spokesman, 2nd Lt. Ken Scholz, says the $300,000 system is expected to arrive next week and is being paid for by the Air Force Safety Center.
He says the system can track birds in real time, giving pilots immediate updates of hazards within a 5-mile radius.
Safety experts think birds were sucked into the engines of the US Airways jet that lost power and ditched into New York’s Hudson River last month.
The new Offutt system comes from DeTect, Inc., which is based in Panama City, Fla.
