Hearing set on effect of Vt. Guard deployment

MONTPELIER, Vt. — Lawmakers will hear how a possible large-scale deployment would affect Vermont National Guard members, their families and the state.

About 1,800 soldiers are expected to be deployed to Afghanistan, perhaps early next year.

It would be the largest single deployment of the Vermont National Guard since World War II.

South Burlington Rep. Helen Head, chairwoman of the House General, Housing and Military Affairs Committee, says the sheer numbers are bound to have implications for troop members, families and employers.

She has scheduled a hearing Tuesday in the House chambers for Guard members and their families to talk about it.
