A Senate compromise to dramatically cut the price tag of an economic recovery bill still leaves funding for improvements in military and veterans facilities in a package aimed at creating jobs.
The compromise drawn up by a handful of senators, which cut more than $100 billion from HR 1, leaves $2.4 billion for new quality-of-life and family-related military construction, $3.2 billion for minor construction, renovations and repairs to existing military facilities, and $3.7 billion for construction of veterans facilities.
Agreement on the compromise was reached Friday night, with final Senate passage of the measure expected Tuesday.
The House of Representatives passed its version of HR 1 on Jan. 28 and has been waiting on the Senate to catch up so work can begin on a final version of the bill, which President Obama hopes to be able to sign by Feb. 16.
Scaling back the price tag of a bill that at one point topped $940 billion in new spending and tax cuts proved necessary for the Senate to gain the support of a few Republican members, which were required to avoid a filibuster of the bill.
