NORFOLK, Va. — Members of the Virginia Army National Guard are preparing themselves in the event of an aircraft going down over a body of water Pilots and crew members received training in underwater survival skills over the weekend at Norfolk Naval Station.
More than 20 members of the Sandston-based 2nd Battalion, 224th Aviation Regiment, participated in the classroom and in-water training.
Officials say with more than 3,300 miles of tidal shoreline in Virginia, the risk of a water landing is a very real possibility, so they must be trained to survive for such an incident.
Soldiers were tested for their swimming capabilities and then received training from Navy instructors.
