Dear Friends:
*Meeting for the rally and march on Saturday January 27th.* The rally starts at 11 AM at the National Mall. The march steps off at 1 PM. Veterans and Military families will be at the front of the march.
When to go: It is a very good idea to be early so that you can make your way through to the meeting spot. If the weather isn't horrible, 10:30 might be a good time. If the weather is freezing, definitely show up by noon at the latest so you can work your way to the front.
Here is where the veterans and military families will be: The stage for the rally will be at 3rd Street, between Jefferson and Madison, on the west side of 3rd Street. Parallel to Jefferson and Madison, but closer to the stage are gravel paths. The stage is between the gravel paths. As you look at the stage, go to the left side and you should see veterans' and military family's banners. They will be in front of the labor people. A good map is available on the VFP web site: veteransforpeace.org. The nearest Metro Station is Federal Center, SW on the organge and blue lines. Almost as close is Judiciary Square on the red line, which will have the advantage of bringing you directly to the left side of the stage.
*Gathering after the march* When: directly after the march Chuck Kauffman of the Nicaragua Network and the Alliance for Global Justice has offered us his apartment, which he has yet to move in to, in the building belonging to the Alliance for Global Justice. The address is 1247 E Street, SE. It is walking distance from the Capitol where my understanding is that the march is ending, but we may be tired and want to take the Metro. The nearest stop is the Potomac Ave on the orange and blue lines. From the Metro stop, go up the escalator, face Pennsylvania Avenue, turn right and walk 2 blocks to 13th Street. Turn right, and the building will be the last one on the left. If you are walking, just walk East on Pennsylvania Ave to 13th Street.
All veterans, military families and their friends are welcome.
We are planning to have pizza, beer, and soda, donation will be requested. There will be folding chairs and a table, but the place will be basically pretty bare. Chuck and I are planning to leave the march early to open up and get organized, but if you get their before us, just hang out and wait. We will be coming soon. If you are among the first to arrive, we may ask your help in getting the beer.
We will stay until roughly 7 PM, maybe longer if everyone is still enjoying themselves. For those who still have energy, Patrick McCann, DC VVAW Contact and Board Member of Veterans for Peace has suggested going out afterwards to Busboys and Poets, 2021 14th Street, NW (corner of 14th and U Streets). Patrick suggests arriving early because it may be packed because of the march.
If anyone gets lost, I will have my cell on during waking hours: 773 425-9780. You can also try Amy Myers, 773 297-4099.
