2 sailors arrested in San Diego drug sting

SAN DIEGO – Two active-duty sailors and a former sailor are among more than nearly three dozen people arrested and charged during a three-month undercover operation by local and federal law enforcement in off-base military housing areas, San Diego authorities said Tuesday.

The sting operation netted felony drug charges against 33 people, and investigators collected 2 pounds of crystal methamphetamine, a half-pound of cocaine, 1 gram of heroin, 100 Ecstasy pills, more than 75 Oxycontin pills, more than 400 marijuana plants, seven guns and $19,000 in cash, according to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office.

“This operation has rounded up drug dealers who were jeopardizing public safety in military housing,” District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis said in a statement. “The dedicated men and women serving in the military, along with their families, deserve a drug-free environment where they live.”

The DA’s office had not yet released the names of the people arrested or charged in the so-called “Operation Endless Summer.” All of the people charged face, at minimum, state prosecution on charges of selling illegal drugs, said Assistant Deputy Attorney Chris Lindberg, who heads the narcotics division.

The three-month investigation, which ran from October to January, targeted “civilian drug dealers who were willing to operate in or around Navy housing areas,” Lindberg said, noting that local residents’ complaints to NCIS led to the investigation. “We had feedback from the community that there were problems in certain areas.”
