MISSOULA, Mont. — A 19-year-old Missoula man convicted of stomping a homeless Navy veteran to death has requested a new trial, arguing prosecutors failed to disclose they were interviewing another possible suspect in the case.

Anthony St. Dennis was convicted of deliberate homicide in January for the death of Forrest Salcido and is scheduled to be sentenced March 5.

According to a motion filed last week by St. Dennis’ public defenders, police interviewed a third suspect while St. Dennis’ trial was under way in Havre. However, the results of that interview were not divulged until the following week, after St. Dennis had been convicted.

In the motion, public defenders Chris Daly and Paulette Ferguson wrote that prosecutors’ failure to disclose the witness statement was a violation of St. Dennis’ constitutional right to due process.

The motion said that Jan. 8, a young woman met with Missoula detectives and told them a former acquaintance had bragged to her about taking part in the attack.
