Sailor starts site for moving theft victims
Sailor starts site for moving theft victims

A sailor whose household goods were stolen when he moved from Naples, Italy, to the U.S. has set up a Web site, Victims of Naples, to connect with other people who were victims of theft.

“When our shipment arrived, everything except two chairs were taken. Imagine the heartbreak we felt as the shipment was opened and found nothing inside,” Information System Technician 2nd Class Greg Schreiner wrote in an e-mail after reading a Military Times story about another sailor, Electronics Technician 1st Class Jonathan Palmer, who was the victim of a similar theft late last year. Schreiner started the Web site after reading the story.

Dean Cummings, owner of AAAA Forwarding Inc., in Clearwater, Fla., which hired subcontractors who handled Palmer’s move, told Military Times earlier that his preliminary investigation indicates Palmer’s goods were stolen at the point of origin in Italy. He said he believes the company that packed the goods is out of business, and that he has not been able to recover the money he paid them.

But it is not clear who in the military, if anyone, is investigating the thefts.

Schreiner said from what he has heard, he and Palmer are not the only victims. “I have heard up to 15 other families were also ripped off,” Schreiner said.
