Ex-Coast Guard chief sentenced in rape case

BARNSTABLE, Mass. — A former Coast Guardsman convicted of four counts of rape has been sentenced to three to four years in prison.

But a judge on Wednesday stayed David Pierce’s sentence pending an appeal of Tuesday’s conviction.

Judge Gary Nickerson told the court that in order to stay a sentence a judge must believe there would be a likelihood of success on appeal.

Pierce’s former girlfriend accused him of raping her in 2005 when they lived together in Yarmouth. His attorney said the sex was consensual.

At the time of his arrest in 2006, Pierce was a master chief petty officer with 20 years service.
