Lawmakers back Ill. base bid for cyber command

MASCOUTAH, Ill. — Illinois’ congressional delegation is lobbying for Scott Air Force Base in southwestern Illinois to become home to the military branch’s new Cyberspace Command.

Lawmakers wrote to Air Force Secretary Michael Donley this week and said they believe the air base near Mascoutah already has a technologically savvy work force.

They say that makes the base a perfect fit for the new command, which will coordinate computer network defense and offensive attacks on enemy networks.

Scott is among six bases vying for the command. A decision is expected by June.
