A bomb scare at Ramstein Air Base in Germany late Wednesday afternoon forced the evacuation of two buildings there, a Ramstein statement said.
At about 4 p.m., a bomb-sniffing dog on patrol alerted his handler of a “potential hazard,” the release said.
Base emergency teams, including Ramstein’s explosive ordnance disposal unit, were called to search the buildings and didn’t find any threatening items. The buildings reopened at about 6 p.m.
Military bases in Germany have been targets of terrorist attacks in the past.
In August 1985, a bomb inside a parked car at Rhein Main Air Base detonated, killing two Americans and wounding 20 others. The same month, an unexploded bomb was found onboard a train used to transport U.S. Army troops to West Berlin.
