Passed-over majors to be eyed for retention

The selective continuation provisions of federal law will be extended to senior majors passed over for promotion by the 2009 Army Competitive Category lieutenant colonel board.

Basic-branch majors who receive a second nonselection for active-duty advancement to lieutenant colonel, and who do not have an approved voluntary or mandatory retirement or release date within 90 days of the board convening date, will be considered for voluntary retention on active duty.

Majors previously selected for continuation but whose selective continuation status expires before July 30, 2010, also will be considered for retention.

The annual ACC lieutenant colonel board is scheduled for Feb. 18-March 13.

Under Title 10 of the U.S. Code, most majors are required to retire when they reach 25 years of active federal commissioned service.
