FORT LEAVENWORTH, Kan. — Under a mandate from the United Nations, the next crop of U.S. Army majors waged a full-scale invasion near the Caspian Sea.

The race was on to turn back an enemy force from a rogue republic while setting the stage for carrying out a stability campaign.

It was all part of a recent exercise at the Army’s Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth. It meshed the military’s traditional capabilities of major combat operations with the lessons being learned from war in Iraq.

The officers fought the temptation to level the enemy and all in sight, knowing whatever they destroy, the military will have to rebuild.

Officers punched their orders into a computer and hit “send,” the game lurching forward like the board game Risk.
