I think it is ridiculous how poorly our veterans are treated, VA hospitals seem to be so underfunded and understaffed. Would it be better if the government just provided health insurance for veterans and allowed them to go anywhere? I don't know a lot about it, but I do know that VA hospitals should, in theory, provide the BEST treatment in the world.

1. I've been getting care at VA hospitals for 27 years
The first place I received care was at the VAMC in Memphis. I was sent there for physical rehabilitation after my injury. The spinal cord clinic shared a floor with the psychiatric ward. That was interesting. At the time none of the therapists would teach us how to do wheelies or jump curbs. Pretty primitive and backward.

Then it was down to Tampa for an experience at the James Haley VAMC. I only went a few times (because I managed to keep my health at a high level with exercise, diet and care) and stopped altogether after they amputated the good leg on a veteran and then went ahead and took the one they were supposed to take. Ugh.

Last stop was the Dallas VAMC. It was like going back in time; old fixtures, crowded hallways and faded paint. But they built a brand-new Spinal Cord center and started upgrading. Now the place absolutely kicks ass. The physician I see is in a wheelchair (!) and really, really understands what it's like. The nursing staff is second to none (I know most of them by name and I'm still healthy).

I believe that if everyone received the level of treatment that I do at the Dallas VAMC SCI center we would have an excellent health care system.

And one more thing: Every person that works there that I've talked with absolutely does not like Bush and his administration. That's just an excellent bonus!

2. The way to fix them is to stop closing the VA hospitals
increase the funding for the hospitals in a way that the money can never be appropriated for anything else.

Our soldiers at least deserve this for their service.

I am sick of the Republican talking about how they support the troops and the last 4 years all they have done is short change our soldiers.

3. SIngle payer National Heath Care system-
Do away with the VA treating our vets and lets have them treated for what ails them in the same system as everyone else. This would keep the promise to the vets and would be good for all the rest of us.

Anyone know, How does Canada take care of its veterans?
