LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — An Arkansas soldier shot while protecting his wounded comrades in Afghanistan took a new position Tuesday night — a seat near first lady Michelle Obama.
Sgt. Jonathon James of Mountain View sat three rows back from the first lady in a special box during President Barack Obama’s first speech to a joint session of Congress. James said his name was one of 50 sent along to the White House for the honor of representing the Army during the address.
“It was one of the best experiences I’ve done in my life,” James told The Associated Press in an interview Wednesday. “When you’re in that situation ... it was just an honor.”
James, 31, arrived Tuesday afternoon for a meeting at the White House with Michelle Obama. While James couldn’t take a photo with his own camera, the soldier said staffers snapped posed pictures with the first lady. She also spent about 20 minutes talking to the military members, with James thanking her for the recognition.
There was another added benefit to the visit.
