Mideast edition, Thursday, February 26, 2009

One of the four U.S. soldiers shot by a pair of men in Iraqi police uniforms in Mosul has died of his wounds, the U.S. military said late Tuesday.

The soldier, who is not being identified publicly until next of kin have been notified, died at the Combat Support Hospital on the U.S. base in Mosul, officials said.

An Iraqi interpreter was also killed in the shooting, which was the third incident since November in which gunmen wearing Iraqi uniforms have attacked American troops in northern Iraq, where the insurgency has remained stronger than in other areas of the country.

Military officials did not release the conditions of the three other U.S. troops and a second Iraqi interpreter who were wounded in the incident.

According to Iraqi and American reports, the American troops had gone to meet local forces at an Iraqi police station around 2 p.m. on Tuesday. When the Americans arrived at a bridge checkpoint in the city, Iraqis manning the checkpoint opened fire.
