Bush, Truman get new commanders

Two East Coast aircraft carrier crews took on new commanding officers recently.

On Feb. 25, Capt. DeWolfe “Chip” Miller III took command of the aircraft carrier George H.W. Bush from Capt. Kevin O’Flaherty. Miller recently commanded the amphibious transport dock Nashville. O’Flaherty led the Bush pre-commissioning unit and was on hand for the ship’s Jan. 10 commissioning. He will work on the staff of Naval Air Forces Atlantic.

Bush completed four days of builder’s trials on Feb. 17. The ship is expected to make its first deployment in fall 2010.

On Feb. 18, Capt. Joseph Clarkson relieved Capt. Herman Shelanski as commanding officer of the carrier Harry S. Truman. Shelanski awaits a new assignment, according to Naval Air Forces Atlantic. Clarkson is a former A-7E and F/A-18 pilot.
