Guard chief: Enlistment bonuses to take hit

The chief of the National Guard Bureau said financial incentives to join the Air National Guard will likely dwindle as the current economic crisis continues.

Gen. Craig R. McKinley said during economic boom times the Guard offered fat incentives to recruit and retain personnel.

“Then suddenly that bonus becomes an entitlement and those dollars are going to dry up, I promise,” McKinley said, speaking to a group of defense reporters Thursday, just shy of 100 days into his tenure as the bureau’s first four-star general.

“It’s going to take leadership to make sure those young people stay with us.”

McKinley discussed recruiting and recapitalization strategies with the 54 adjutants general at the Adjutants General Association of the United States meeting this week in Washington.
