Military making do with less landBy Tim Kauffman - Staff writer

The military is increasingly caught in a pinch for land.
The military’s need for additional space is growing, but so is the general population’s — making it harder for Defense Department agencies to find suitable land.
The Army alone needs 4½ million additional acres to meet training requirements. But it’ll have to make do with less, said Keith Eastin, assistant secretary of the Army for installations and environment.
“I think it’s unrealistic to think we’re going to be able to close that gap,” Eastin said last week at a hearing before the House Armed Services subcommittee on readiness.
Finding enough land suitable for training is one problem; but even if suitable land were available, it would cost too much to acquire, Eastin said.
