Thousands of sailors will be sent packing this year — more than 2,600 because of high-year tenure, and another 1,200 through re-enlistment disapproval.
For those sailors, even those with up to 14 years of service, the chances for finishing an active-duty Navy career are done.
But there is hope. The Navy doesn’t advertise it as an option, but those willing to switch to the Army will have the chance to stay in, retrain to a new specialty, advance much faster than in the Navy, and even retire.
Under the five-year-old Blue to Green program, you also face more liberal high-year tenure — in the Army, “retention control points” — allowing sailors-turned-soldiers to stay years longer in their paygrades.
The Army is bigger, nearly twice the size of the Navy, with 553,000 soldiers. And it’s still growing — to as much as 577,000 in the next few years.
