An automatic rifle made by Heckler & Koch may appear in combat by next fall. Soldiers may see it in action, even if they don’t carry it.
The Marine Corps has selected an H&K-made automatic rifle as a possible replacement for its M249 Squad Automatic Weapon.
The H&K Infantry Automatic Rifle beat out three other models in a competition — two made by Colt Defense LLC and one from FN Herstal — according to Chief Warrant Officer 5 Jeffrey Eby, the Corps’ senior gunner.
While it’s not a done deal, the H&K model is the clear front-runner in an effort that began in 2006.
Soldiers who want to check out the new lightweight, magazine-fed weapon may have to go to their leatherneck friends.
