The commanding officer of the attack submarine Buffalo was relieved Sunday afternoon, four months after taking command of the Guam-based sub.

Cmdr. Christopher Henry, who took command of the submarine Aug. 7, was relieved as a precautionary measure, said Lt. Cmdr. Greg Kuntz, spokesman for Submarine Group 7 in Japan.

Henry’s relief was due to a “loss of confidence in ability to command,” Kuntz said.

Capt. Doug Wright, commodore of Submarine Squadron 15, removed Henry after assessments were conducted on the ship, evaluating operations and overall trends.

“We continually assess all of our submarines — daily, weekly and monthly,” Kuntz said. “We found this problem before it became a significant issue.”

1. Think this is the 19th or 20th CO to be sacked in the Navy this year.

4. I wonder, in cases like this, if it is mental stress getting to these guys.
That job has to have a stress level absolutely through the roof.

Any way, I hope for the best for Cmdr. Henry.

6. That will be Retired Cmdr. Henry soon.
Relief of command is a career killer.

7. Too bad, actually. All that training and experience, gone.
Hope he finds a good life after his career is over.

My uncle retired as a Commander from the Navy.

Oh, the tales he tells.

5. "Commodore of Submarine Squadron 15"

That's interesting. Is "commodore," apart from being a now-unused rank, being used as a semi-honorary term to denote leadership status? A position title for senior captains? If that's been a longstanding practice I totally missed it. Thanks for any insight.

8. Yes
it is an honorary title to show a higher level of responsibility and seniority.

9. Thanks!

I thought I was a fairly well-read military buff but there was one huge hole in my knowledge! Thanks, I appreciate it.
