SAN DIEGO — An elderly man is charged with posing as a decorated Marine general at a Veterans of Foreign Wars event in San Diego County.
David Vincent Weber, 69, was charged last week with a misdemeanor for wearing several fake medals. Federal prosecutors are considering felony charges.
Authorities say veterans extended Weber considerable courtesy because of his supposed rank. Weber, who wore five Legion of Merit medals and two Purple Hearts, was even allowed to eat the first piece of cake cut at the November event. That honor usually goes to the oldest Marine attending.
Weber’s attorney says his client has prostate cancer, Parkinson’s disease, has had three strokes and is taking 18 medications.
Weber, who has refused to comment, is due back in court Jan. 14 for a preliminary hearing.
