Pentagon won’t recoup retro stop-loss pay

The military will not recoup retroactive stop-loss pay issued to service members who received bonuses for voluntarily re-enlisting or extending their service while in stop-loss status, the Pentagon said Tuesday.

The change is not believed to affect many service members, however, because so few apparently have been paid so far under the $534 million program.

The number of those paid who get to keep the money was not immediately available.

Eligible service members who were involuntarily extended due to wartime personnel requirements from Sept. 11, 2001, through Sept. 30, 2008, can apply for $500 for any month or portion of a month in which they were involuntarily retained. About 170,000 service members were affected, mostly soldiers.

Applications were first taken Oct. 21, but administrative problems slowed the effort. As of Dec. 18, 1,108 claims had been paid — 282 to soldiers and 826 to airmen — according to the Defense Finance and Accounting Service.
