ESSEX JUNCTION, Vt. — It’s a big deal for a family to have one of its members march off to war in Afghanistan as part of the largest Vermont National Guard deployment since World War II.
So imagine what Hugo DiNunzio, 51, was going through Wednesday.
He’d watched his youngest son, Spc. Francisco DiNunzio, 21, leave last month for combat training at Camp Atterbury, Ind., prior to going to Afghanistan. Now he was saying goodbye to his other two sons, Spc. Omar DiNunzio, 22, and Pfc. Jorge DiNunzio, 24.
The two sons were among the 100 members of the B Battery 1-101st Field Artillery unit being feted at Wednesday’s farewell ceremony in Essex Junction before going to Indiana for training and, ultimately, to Afghanistan.
Add in two other close relations in the DiNunzio clan also being deployed to Afghanistan, and there might not be a Vermont family with more on the line when the 1,500-member Guard contingent heads into harm’s way in March.
