Navy to close Ingleside 5 months early

The Navy is speeding up the closure of Naval Station Ingleside, Texas, opting to leave the base five months earlier than planned.

In another move related to the Base Closure and Realignment Commission, the service officially announced the relocation of the Naval Criminal Investigate Service from the Washington Navy Yard to Quantico, Va., effective Sept. 15, 2011.

Both were approved in December and announced by the Navy in separate official notices Wednesday.

Ingleside, most recently home to the Navy’s Mine Warfare Command, will close April 30 — five months earlier than the planned Sept. 30 exit — because “mine warfare commands and forces tenant upon the naval station will have transferred” by that date, according to the notice.

The base will then be turned over to the city of Ingleside for redevelopment.

1. No, the base will then be turned over to the city of Ingleside

where it will sit and rust and rot. There's nothing else there. If there's a redevelopment plan, I missed it. I don't think there is one of any significance.
